How to Make a Living As an Online Writer

Its been days and youve been researching on how to make a living from online writing. This is what you want, but with a full-time job, a family to take care of, youre not sure if this is a viable option for you. You hear stories of struggling authors and their big break 10 years later. Or you hear that online writingmake pennies on content mills. This is NOT what you want. You want to be able to make a living as a writer, quit your full-time job and live out your passion. But, how do you do online writing? What are the steps to make money as a writer? Ill share my story of how I make a living writing and then give you steps to get you on the way! Online Writing for Beginners Ive been a stay at home mom since I had my twins over five years ago. But, when they were around 1.5 years old, I was gettingbored..with the day-to-day tasks of taking care of my twins. I wanted more than changing diapers and cleaning up after messes. I needed a creative outlet. This was also the time I needed to start contributing to our finances. Where I live you get a year off of maternity, so my year was up and I needed to scramble to make money at home. My husband introduced me to finding work online. I read blogs from other moms and learned about freelance writing from them. They were getting paid to write! How fantastic is that? This was my creative outlet writing. Ive always enjoyed writing when I was younger, so this was a great opportunity for me to profit from my passion. I started researching about where to find freelance writing jobs and learned about content mills (although I didnt know about content mills back then). I signed up for a profile and got my first assignment. I was excited but not ecstatic as the job was less than $2 for 300 words. But, you know what? That gig took me hours to write (300 words!!!). I was soo new and had no idea how to write non fiction content that the research alone took most of my time. I got paid, but decided this is not how you make a living as a writer. Free Course on Getting Paid to Write Online I knew I didnt want to write books and be an author, but I also didnt want to get paid pennies for my writing. I decided to try freelance marketplaces like Upwork but found no success on those platforms (and Im glad!). Places like Upwork value bulk content for the cheapest rates. And, your writing is mostly ghostwritten, so you cant build your portfolio with Upwork. I was failing. I didnt have the time to keep looking for ways to be a freelance writer; I had twins to take care of and a house to manage. I needed to find a different way to make enough money to contribute to our household finances. And within six months of changing my strategy I was making a living as a freelance writer! Now, three years later, I am able to stay home and write for a living. I write for digitally native brands and can make up to $600 a blog post. If you want to do the same, here are the steps I took to start online writing. 1. Start a Website + Practice Online Writing The first thing I did to change my strategy was start a blog. I needed to house my freelance writing service and I found a website to be the BEST place to market your business. You may not think you really need a website to start freelance writing. Check out my video where I answer if you really need one or not to succeed as a freelance writer. Plus, make sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel! Your freelance writing website is a place to show your credibility as a freelance writer even if this is your FIRST DAY! or you JUST landed a freelance writing job. And it will be how you make a living as an online writer. Use your blog to practice your writing. While you can use other platforms like Medium or LinkedIn, I see no harm in creating blog posts as a way to practice your writing. This is exactly what I did when I started this blog! And you know what? I created posts about being a freelance writer (even though I wasnt technically a paid writer at that time). I didnt blog in my paying niche (since I didnt know at the time what my niche was going to be) and I didnt have a schedule of blog content. I just created blog posts of what I was learning at the time. I practiced: Formatting a blog post Creating value-driven headlines Engaging writing tactics like speaking to your reader when you write How to site sources These are all great writing skills online writers need. So, start your blog today and start creating blog posts to help you write for an online audience. 2. Start Creating Samples You need to remember that online no one knows you exist yet. You have to show everyone what you are capable of as a writer and this means having samples on your website (or other places). While I created samples and placed them on my blog, the best way to build your portfolio is to guest post. Guest posting means you create a blog post that will be published on someone elses blog. You can guest post on popular sites or lesser known sites. The point is you want to have a live link of your work to share to prospects when you pitch to a job ad. But, what if you dont know your niche? I suggest you pick a few topics you are interested in and start creating blog post ideas that you would create for your clients. Heres an example. Lets say you enjoy health. You run, practice yoga and eat a low-carb diet. Have a Lead Generation Strategy To make a living with online writing, you need to have an inbound strategy whereby prospects come to you for your writing service. The writers that fail or dont make enough money to quit their full-time job spend most of their time pitching and hustling. As a mom to twins, I had no time to cold pitch or find freelance writing jobs month after month. Yes, I did do this in the beginning and I was successful; but that is only a short term strategy. Your long term strategy is lead generation. How will prospects find you? How will they decide that you are the writer for them? To be successful with the inbound process, you need to effectively market your freelance writing service. Funnily enough, when I first started understanding the marketing side of business, I fell in love with what I was learning. And this eventually lead to my freelance writing niche. The best ways to attract freelance writing clients is to start using some copywriting techniques. This means speaking to your readers and talking about the results of hiring you, rather than all the features of your writing. You can get a feel of this by checking out other freelance writing websites. Learn how they speak to their ideal freelance writing client, what pages they have on their website and how they speak about their writing services. From there, you can start marketing your website online. To help you get started, check out my..video! 4. Start Pitching In the beginning, the fastest and easiest way to find a freelance writing job is to use freelance writing job boards. While these jobs may not be the best types of jobs out there, they usually pay well ($50 a post) and will get your foot in the door. Go to a job board and see what types of jobs there are. Get a feel of whats out there. Some job sites have a search option where you can search your niche topic. While there are other ways to find a freelance writing job, first go to job boards and then try other places. When you find a freelance writing job that you are interested in, its time to send your pitch. Your pitch should mention where you found the ad, who you are and how you can help the prospect. Here is the pitch that helped land my first freelance writing gig. When pitching, try to have a process so that you stick to it, and make it part of your hustle strategy. For some new freelance writers, sending that first pitch brings a lot of fear. Fear in pitching doesnt have to cripple you and stop your dreams of making a living as a freelance writer. Check out my video to help you overcome your fear of pitching! 5. Increase Your Rate (All The Time) Okay. To make a living from all of this you need to have a high rate for your writing. But you cant just claim a high rate; your online writing has to show that. So from the time you land your first client to your 10th client, your writing HAS to improve. When I started in the digital marketing niche, my rate was $.12/word. Whenever I got an email from a prospect I increased my rate. Most times I never landed the gig, but there were times I did. So, my rate increased to $.15/word. I would repeat this until I was comfortable with a rate that can help me make a living out of this. Currently, my rate is $200 per 500 words for byline content. This strategy only works if: You land high-paying clients or big brands/influencers Your writing gets better (more in-depth content, different types of content, long-form content, case studies, etc..) But, you might notice that you are still spending a lot of hours writing and less time with your children or family. For me, I wanted to balance my work and home life. I felt I was spending too much time writing and researching. So I had to find other ways to make money that didnt involve a lot of my time. While I did start coaching aspiring writers, I didnt do that for long since that took a lot of time out of my schedule too! What I ended up doing to diversify my income (and increase my income) is: Affiliate Marketing Course creation Affiliate Marketing Affiliate marketing means promoting a tool, service or product like an eBook or course on your blog or on social media. You get a special link that you use when you talk about this product and if a reader clicks on that link and purchases from you, you get a small commission. I promote around 7 affiliate products that helps me supplement my freelance writing income. Here is a snapshot of only one affiliate product: The biggest thing to remember when you start affiliate marketing is that you are authentic. You used these products or services and they helped you and that is why you are suggesting them to your audience. Course Creation The other way I make money online is by creating my own products specifically courses or masterclasses. These are online and either in video or as written lessons. I have some courses for bloggers and some for writers. I plan on continuing creating products for both my audiences of bloggers and aspiring freelance writers as this is lucrative and doesnt involve a lot of my time. But, it does involve upkeep and maintenance. And this can involve more time, but its a one-time thing once a year. It is emphasized that the protagonists in the novel, who are two Nazi drivers of the gas trucks, are not mere murder machines. The author humanizes the characters in order to present a different way of perceiving the nature of evil. Through the humor and empathy implemented in the novel, the characters that embody two Nazi soldiers ar e given human faces instead of the sole image of a murderer. A nameless teacher from Belgrade narrates the story about the destruction of the Serbian Jews during the war. He was obsessed with reconstructing his family tree, therefore, he toiled endlessly in the archives to gather information, but failed miserably for he could find only a few members of his family while there were sixty of them killed. The narrator says, â€Å"For me to truly understand real people like my relatives, I had first to understand real people like Gà ¶tz and Meyer.† . The novel is about these two characters, who were Nazi soldiers, being unknown to the narrator though. When the narrator begins his narration, he knows nothing about William Gà ¶tz and Erwin Meyer except for their names: â€Å"Gà ¶tz and Meyer. Having never seen them, I can only imagine them.† Initially he describes them as unknown people or characters as described in a tale. They were German soldiers, they were SS commissio ned, who were assigned the duty of driving a large truck for a â€Å"special purpose†. Their duty was to drive the truck every day to and from the fairground in Belgrade. The narrator constantly repeats the following line, â€Å"Having never seen them, I can only imagine them† (1) in order to imprint their images in the mind of the listeners, as well as in his own mind. One might say the narrator plays a dangerous game by trying to understand the characters at the risk of becoming them. At this point, one must note the importance of memory in the novel. Robert Eaglestone in the book The Holocaust and the Postmodern highlights the fact that â€Å"memory† helps to â€Å"evoke nearly everything there is to a person and to a society.† (74) Eaglestone also believes that the way â€Å"we remember the past† helps in framing our identity. Like most of the Holocaust fictions, the narrator too is nostalgic of his destroyed past and tells the story from memor y. However, unlike most Holocaust fictions, Albahari does not depict an ugly picture of the time. His stories deal with death, killing, mass murders in gas chamber, but they do not describe all the sufferings in detail to haunt the reader’s imagination of the Nazi carnage. He further underlines that both of them are married and worry about the children at home. One of them, maybe Meyer (again the narrator is unsure which one of them) is fond of children and like presenting them chocolates. Now these children could easily be Jewish youngsters at Belgrade Fairground whom he had to transport in his truc k. Such a scene shows that these two men were the victims. They were there to perform their duty, in reality, they were not monsters with evil eyes and poisonous fangs. The narrator talks of the ambitions and desires of the protagonists. One of them, (again the narrator is unsure which one), wanted to be a pilot, and the other one has other dreams in his mind. The narrator is often unsure how to differentiate between them, and often forgets to stress out who was doing some particular things in this or that scene, but these characters are not presented to the readers as caricature of evil villains. Rather, they are presented as individuals committed towards one task. The narrator describes the truck that the protagonists drive: The truck was a Saurer, a five-tonner with a boxlike body, 1.7 meters high and 5.8 meters long †¦ A full hundred people could stand in the back †¦ During these trips, the souls became real souls, no longer human in form. Gà ¶tz and Meyer most certai nly knew what was happening in the back of the truckAfter all, the people they were driving had no souls, that, at least, was a commonly known fact! Jews were nothing more than milder on the face of the world! And so, day in and day out, they would repeat their practiced routine. This paragraph shows two protagonists in a bad light to the readers, showing that they were carriers of death to men, women, and children they carried in their truck and believed that they were soulless and faceless creatures. The routine involved the protagonists in the destruction of the Serbian Jews. The novel shows a host of killings that were conducted by SS squads; they shot hundreds of people face to face. However, such mass killings made the German soldiers weary and took a toll on their morale. Therefore, a less personal means of massacre was employed through these mobile gas vans. After that, they were never involved in killing. Then, the dead bodies were driven to the Serbian prison where the bodies were dumped. While this gruesome process is being put into effect, the narrator imagines Gotz and Meyer â€Å"chatting with their commander†, again enabling the readers to look at these two bearers of death as humans. The memory of the narrator plays a major role in the description of the biographical or historical fiction, especially that of the Holocaust . This piece of fiction is also drawn from the memory, but the narrator is truthful enough to say that h e has not met the characters Goth and Meyer, and therefore, he is obliged to draw from his imagination, which of course has been discoursed with stereotypes. Individual memory exists in a collective form, adhering to the social norms and framework . For example, in the story, the memory of the narrator was reconstructed by events and incidents that had been externally infused in his mind by those groups that influenced his memory. Consequently, it is obvious that he will embitter feelings towards the two German soldiers he describes. His imagination is bound to have the stereotypes, and Jewish constructs influence his description of the story as well as the characters. This has helped in humanizing the characters as well. The novel can be called humorous due to the deadpan tone of the narrator, presenting the story to the readers in a satirical tone. This gives the novel an uncanny comical feature. Once the readers pick a book on holocaust, the prevalent stereotypes play in their mi nd and eventually they expect a horror story of human atrocities and sufferings. The element of empathy and humor present in the story is evident in the way the narrator describes the two Nazi protagonists. In a non-committal voice, as if he was narrating the story of any other man, he described how Gà ¶tz and Meyer were performing their work and duties. He tried to imagine these men, having with their personal lives, full of concerns and problems. The implementation of humor in describing an act of atrocity makes it more tragic . Humor in holocaust fiction does not imply that the whole story becomes a â€Å"carnival†; what is strives to portray is a different perspective of life at the time when it seems it can only be filled with death . After school, the narrator visits a doctor to get the problem of his itching examined. The doctor inquires of any past complaint of skin disease in the narrator’s family. To this query, the narrator sarcastically answers, â€Å"Most of them died of poisoning† . Another instance where the narrator presents a case of dark, double edged humor was when he asked his students to imagine a journey to the camp and when he tells one of his students that she will not be allowed take her pet to the camp. She then contemptuously says â€Å"Why, this is inhuman† . Even the protagonists Gà ¶tz and Meyer are subjected to dark humor as the narrator, making them human as well as inhuman at the same time. The story uses various tropes to show Gà ¶tz and Meyer as humans. One of them is when the narrator directly questions the readers: What kind of man would †¦ consent to do a job that meant putting five or six thousand souls to death? I find it hard to give a student a bad grade at the end of the semester, let alone at the end of the year, but that is nothing compared to the way Gà ¶tz and Meyer must have felt. The narrator at once makes the protagonists human and the very next moment brings out the ugly side of their work. By comparing his work as a teacher and their job as killers, the narrator puts two juxtaposing professions to bring out the satire in it. Thus, through interplay of human and inhuman characters to demonstrate the protagonists, Albahari has actually made Gà ¶tz and Meyer two ordinary men rather than Nazi soldiers. Women were â€Å"more credulous, and since the chief aim of the devil is to corrupt faith, therefore he rather attacks them†(120). Women being credulous and naà ¯ve makes it easier for the devil to entice them into witchery. They were also much more impressionable making them prime targets for â€Å"disembodied spirits† to influence them and cause wickedness (120). The spirits referred to are those of evil and without faith, and since women were more vulnerable they would be more likely to abandon faith and be inclined to follow the devil. Sprenger and Kramer state that a â€Å"wicked woman is by her nature quicker to waver in her faith, and consequently quicker to abjure the faith, which is the root of witchcraft† (121). This further shows how much more likely it would be for women to become witches since the naivety and impressionability of women is what would cause the quickness to waver and abjure faith.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Sprenger and Kramer felt the insatiable carnal lust that was part of women led them to witchery because their lust cannot be satisfied and it would lead to involvement with the devil. Proverbs xxx states â€Å"There are three things which are never satisfied, yea a fourth thing which says not, It is enough; that is, the mouth of the womb† (127). Women basically are viewed as women obsessed with sexual encounters that could not be satisfied by man alone, so they in turn would become involved with the devil to fulfill their desires. This is also shown when a woman falsely accuses Joseph because he would not agree to have sex with her and he ends up imprisoned (121). As explained in the selection â€Å"when she hates someone whom she formerly loved, then she seethes with anger and impatience† (121). This shows how the lust of the woman who accused Joseph caused her wickedness to accuse him.

Leadership In Teamwork Essay

Leadership plays a significant role in the actualization of the set objectives and goals of organization. A leader is someone who has motivates the members in an organization in working towards effectively attaining the set objectives and goals of the organization. Hence, he poses the purveyor of punishment and rewards as a way of deterring laziness and encouraging hard work. Thus, a leader stares the members of the organization and keep them focused on the set objectives and goals of the organization. There are different leadership styles that are exhibited as the leader operates in the organization. These include: democratic leadership style, autocratic, free rein, and situational or transformational leadership. A democratic leader is one that that respects the views of members and adopts their input in making a final decision for the organization. This type of leader welcomes opinions from his subordinates and seeks their views on vital matters concerning the progression of the organization. On the other hand an autocratic leader is someone who does all the decisions in the organization by himself. He has little or no trust on the ability of subordinates. He or she tends to compel workers to abide by his or her decisions whether they are pleasing or not. Leize faire or free rein leadership style is one that gives maximum freedom to workers to make discretions of their own pertaining on how they choose to work or operate. He has little contribution to make on the pattern of steering the workers in working towards meeting the organization’s objectives and goals. Thus, he is regarded as a figure head. A situational or transformational leader is someone that adapt to changes in the environment in which he operates in. a transitional leader don’t have a fixed characteristics but adopt a leadership style that is most relevant in effectively meeting the organization’s objectives and   goals. This leadership style is considered as most effective as the leader will adapt to the changes in the environment by cultivating the right attitude towards motivating the workers in meeting the organization’s goals and objectives. A transformational leader adopts or transform to a given characteristic (either the X variables or Y variables in McGregor theory) depending on the situation. (Wetheim 2005). The transformational leader becomes more effective in periods of uncertainties and high level of instability in the environment. According to Gellis (2001), cited in Mizrahi & Berger (2005), â€Å"with organizational changes administrators find themselves balancing an internal and an external focus simultaneously. Whereas some administrators rise above the challenges and continue to provide positive leadership, others may become overwhelmed by chaos and pressure and turn negative. Still others may attempt to survive by accommodating and adjusting to the environment, exhibiting the traits of transactional leader†.   A transformational leader thus, tends to survive in an environment where there is high level of changes. This is attained by their ability to adopt the right traits to withstand the changes in the environment. Also a transformational leader, have the capability of motivating workers during period of changes resulting from alliances, merger, takeover or reformation in the management structure of the organization. During such period the workers are vulnerable or incapacitated in making a right decision. Some may truncated into making irrational decision from the fear of loosing their jobs or they can’t cope with the new structure in place. It then boils on the transformational leader to direct and motive these workers into adopting the right attitude in making the transformation in the organization become a success. In this view, Lajara et al (2002), argue that leadership capacity is perhaps the one of the most necessary elements in this process of alliance. The participation of senior managers must go beyond the formulation of a strategy based on alliance, they must personally be engaged and show their commitment and enthusiasm in the alliance. This means that a way in which a leader behaves in situation of transformation or changes in the environment will make low ranked employees see reason why to continue by seeing the relevance of such transformation in the organization.
